Who Am I?

By Darlene L. Turner

“You’re never going to amount to anything.”

“I don’t want you on my team. Get to the back of the line.”

“You’re a nobody.”

These are hurtful words most of us have heard at one point or another. They’re hard to overcome, especially when spoken at a young age. The question “Who am I?” runs through our minds. It affects our self-esteem and can carry into adulthood.

In Abducted in Alaska, Hannah discovers something about herself that crushes her and she questions her identity in Christ. Throughout the book, she struggles with her self-esteem but is eventually reminded she’s made in God’s image. It wasn’t easy for her to come to this conclusion and the same is true for us.

So how do we move past our negative feelings of ourselves? Here are some thoughts.

Take a peek at God’s servants in the Bible. Moses didn’t think he was worthy of leading the Israelites out of Egypt. He even asked God, “Who am I?” like we’ve done at times. Look at what he accomplished when he put his trust in God. David took a stone and a slingshot to a sword fight. Goliath towered over him, but David still overcame. He was labeled as a “man after God’s own heart.”  Just think what we can achieve if we put our total trust in Him!

Surrender our feelings of inadequacy over to God. I know. Easier said than done. Believe me, I’ve suffered a lot of self-esteem issues in different periods of my life. Circumstances and how society treats us can sometimes dictate whether our confidence goes up or down. We need to allow God to heal our hearts through it all. Surrender to Him.

Remember we’re not alone. We only need to look around us to discover that others are going through the same thing. It’s comforting to know we can reach out for help. A listening ear is always therapeutic. We can get through this together.

Through it all, sharing that Jesus is Lord is the most important thing. He rescued us and has put a song in our hearts. We have a purpose and it’s to give God glory.

That’s right. We’re a somebody. Not a nobody.

And Jesus chose us. He may not have called us to lead like He did Moses, but He has an awesome plan in store for us. Let’s muster up the confidence He’s given us and go!

Who are we? We’re God’s children and He loves us just as we are. Through Him we can do anything.

Genesis 1:27 (VOICE)

So God did just that. He created humanity in His image, created them male and female.
